Cleaning Pet Urine Stains - A Step by Step Guide

Enzymatic cleaners are highly effective for cleaning pet messes because they contain beneficial bacteria and enzymes that break down the organic matter in pet waste (such as urine, faeces, and vomit) that cause stains and odours. Here is a guide on how to use them effectively:

Step 1: Pre-Cleaning and Preparation

  • Act quickly: For fresh, wet messes, the sooner you can start, the better.
  • Blot the stain: Use a thick layer of paper towels or a clean, absorbent cloth to soak up as much of the liquid as possible. Press down firmly. Continue to blot with clean sections of the towel until no more moisture is absorbed. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain.
  • Remove solids: For solid messes, use a spoon, paper towel, or gloved hand to carefully scoop up and dispose of the waste.
  • Locate old stains: If you’re dealing with a dried or old stain, you may need a black light to find the exact location. Pet urine will often glow under a black light in a darkened room.

Step 2: Applying the Enzymatic Cleaner

  • Test in an inconspicuous area: Before applying the cleaner to the main stain, test it on a hidden spot of the surface (e.g., a corner of the carpet or the back of a cushion) to ensure it won’t cause discoloration or damage.
  • Apply generously: Apply a generous amount of the enzymatic cleaner to the stained area. The cleaner needs to fully saturate the spot, reaching as deep as the original mess did. This is especially important for carpets, where the stain may have soaked into the padding underneath.
  • Allow it to sit: Read the product instructions for the recommended dwell time. This is crucial for giving the enzymes time to break down the organic material. For most stains, this can be anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours, and for old, stubborn stains, it may be necessary to let it sit for as long as 8 to 48 hours.
  • Keep the area moist: It’s important to prevent the cleaner from drying out during the dwell time. You can place a damp towel or plastic wrap over the area to keep it moist.

Step 3: Post-Cleaning

  • Blot and rinse: After the recommended time has passed, use a clean cloth to blot up any remaining cleaner and residue. For some products, a light rinse with cool water may be recommended. Avoid using hot water, as heat can deactivate the enzymes and set the stain permanently.
  • Let it air dry: Allow the area to air dry completely. You can use a fan or open a window to speed up the process.
  • Repeat if necessary: For particularly tough or old stains, you may need to repeat the application process one or more times to fully eliminate the stain and odour.

Important Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid other cleaners: Do not use other cleaning products, especially those containing ammonia, bleach, or vinegar, before using the enzymatic cleaner. These chemicals can “cancel out” or denature the enzymes, rendering them ineffective.
  • Shake before use: If the product is a concentrate, mix it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Shake the bottle before use to ensure the enzymes are active.
  • Patience is key: Enzymatic cleaners work by “digesting” the organic matter. This process takes time, so be patient and allow the product to do its job.
  • Storage: Store enzymatic cleaners in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, which can weaken the active ingredients.
  • Check for safety: Ensure the cleaner you choose is safe for the specific surface you are cleaning (e.g., carpets, hardwood, upholstery).
